Adam Whiting is an accompanist--a Classically-trained pianist who plays well with others. He works at the Cleveland School of the Arts, The Music Settlement, Oregon and Japan Seattle Suzuki Institutes. He spent 12 years as a staff accompanist at the Cleveland Institute of music; he was hired for this position upon graduation from CIM in the spring of 2005 with a double-masters degree in piano performance and accompanying. In 2002, he graduated with a BM in performance from Marylhurst University where he studied with Sr. Anne Cecile Daigle SNJM and Susan DeWitt Smith. He attended the Oregon Suzuki Institute for thirteen years; after a few years' hiatus, he returned in the summer of 2004 as a staff accompanist, at the invitation of the directors of the institute. He studied with the Cavani string quartet for six summers at the Britt Chamber Strings Camp in Ashland, Oregon.
Ruth Marie Ballance has been playing chamber music since she was a child. Some chamber music highlights have included premiering a string quartet by Joseph Hallman at the Cleveland Museum of Art, performing string quartets for inmates in Ohio and Alaska prisons with the Alaska Quartet, giving recitals in the US and Europe as part of the resident string quartet at Samford University, performing chamber works written by composers affected by the Holocaust with her husband as the Ballance Duo in multiple states, and organizing and giving a piano trio concert with the Brandywine Trio of music by women composers at a historic church in Rochester to benefit the Susan B. Anthony House. In Cleveland, she deepened her chamber music studies as a student of the Cavani Quartet and Peter Salaff at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and since then has enjoyed coaching students in chamber music in Cleveland, Oberlin, Rochester, and Seattle.
An early student of the Austin Chamber Music Center in Texas, she received her bachelors and masters degrees in violin performance from the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Linda Cerone, David Russell, and Paul Kantor, where she earned the Jerome Gross Prize in Violin in 2001. Upon graduation, she joined the faculty of the Preparatory Department teaching violin, chamber music, and music theory. Later, she was a faculty member of the Hochstein School of Music and Dance in Rochester where her violin and viola students were regular prize and competition winners. In Alabama she was on the faculty of STEP Birmingham, Samford University, and University of Alabama - Birmingham. A resident of the Seattle area for the last six years, she and her husband have built up a thriving Suzuki program called Ballance Talent Education. A trained Suzuki teacher, she regularly teaches at workshops and institutes and has given presentations at the bi-annual Suzuki Association of the Americas conference. She earned the SAA Certificate of Achievement in 2011.
Linda Bridge began her chamber music studies almost as soon as she began her violin studies as both a collaborative pianist and in string quartets and trios as a violinist. She has since played extensively in the US and Canada as a member of the St. Augustine Quartet and has worked with members of the Juilliard, Miami, Concord, and Borodin string quartets. With the St. Augutine quartet, Linda recorded a CD of Brahms and Bartok. Linda received a Bachelors in Music from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music where she studied and performed chamber music regularly as part of their renowned chamber music program featuring Naumberg Award winning faculty Mark Sokol and Bonnie Hampton. She also received a Master of Music at Boston University where she had the privilege to study chamber music with Leslie Parnas and members of the Muir String Quartet. Linda is a Suzuki trained violin and viola teacher and was on the faculty of the Longy School of Music Suzuki program for several years. She has also had a successful private violin and viola studio both in Boston, MA and Houston, TX.
Jared Ballance, whose cello playing has been praised by the Cleveland Plain Dealer for its “poetic and dramatic panache,” has been performing chamber music since he was a young child, beginning with chamber music with his brother, a violinist, and sister, a violinist and pianist. Initially beginning as a violinist, Jared also learned to play the piano and viola, in addition to his primary instrument, the cello. In high school Jared’s string quartet performed a concert of string quartets composed by chemists at the national chemistry convention, including one worked “composed” by an early computer that was programmed to compose by a chemist. While in high school he began attending the Castleman Quartet Program during the summers, where he studied string quartet playing with members of leading chamber music ensembles and cello-piano chamber music with Charles Reiner, the favorite collaborative pianist of violinist Henryk Szeryng. He was invited to attend the Quartet Program in Vienna, Austria, where he studied with members of the Amadeus String Quartet and performed piano quartet repertoire.
Jared studied cello with Richard Aaron as an undergraduate and Desmond Hoebig as a graduate student at the Cleveland Institute of Music. In Cleveland he studied chamber music with Peter Salaff, the Cavani String Quartet, and members of the Cleveland Orchestra. While still a student at CIM, he performed Schubert’s “Trout” Quintet with members of the Cleveland Orchestra. He is committed to performing contemporary music, premiering many chamber music and solo works.
While a doctoral candidate at the Eastman School of music, Jared was a member of the Brandywine Piano Trio and Ossia New Music Ensemble. Jared has given lecture recitals on chamber music composed by composers who suffered under the Nazi Regime, including works composed and premiered in internment camps, at the Eastman School of Music, Hochstein School of Music and Dance, and Samford University. In addition to a DMA in cello performance from Eastman, studying with Alan Harris, Jared earned a MA in music theory pedagogy from the Eastman School of Music. He enjoys helping others hear and understand how composers communicate characters, moods, emotions, and stories in music through the ways they construct and organize their music.
While a faculty member at Samford University, Jared was the cellist of the Samford String Quartet, giving performances in both the USA and Europe. He has performed throughout the country as a member of the Ballance Duo.
Jared maintains an active studio teaching cello students of all ages and levels, teaching chamber music ensembles, and Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Dr. Ballance is a trained Suzuki cello teacher and earned the Dalcroze Teaching Certificate from the Juilliard School of music. He is currently a candidate for the Dalcroze Teaching License at Carnegie Mellon University. He regularly teaches Dalcroze at summer camps and music festivals and Dalcroze workshops for adults and music teachers.
